How to Get More Google Reviews (Without Breaking the Rules)

Ask every customer, the same day the job is done, with a direct link to your Google review form, and reply to every review you get. Send the request by text, keep it short and make it automatic so nobody forgets. Never pay for reviews, offer anything in return or ask only the happy customers.
The article

Reviews are the first thing people compare when they choose a plumber, a contractor or a med spa on Google, and they are one of the signals Google uses to decide which businesses show up in the map. Most businesses don’t lack happy customers. They lack a habit of asking. Here is how to build that habit and keep your Google Business Profile reviews coming in every week.
Why reviews matter so much for a local business
- They help you rank. Google says reviews are part of how well known your business is, one of the things it weighs in local results (Google Business Profile Help). More on that in our guide to the Google map pack.
- They help you win the call. Two roofers show up side by side. One has 12 reviews from 2022, the other has 80, with the latest from last week and an answer under each one. You know who gets the call.
- They are recent proof. A steady flow matters more than a big number you collected once.
1. Ask at the right moment
The best moment is when the customer is happiest: right after the job, when the leak is fixed or the treatment looks great. A week later they have moved on. Ask in person (“Would you mind leaving us a quick review? I’ll text you the link”) and then send the link while they still remember your name.
2. Send a direct link by text
Your Google Business Profile gives you a short link that opens the review form directly. Send that, not “search for us on Google.” A text gets opened far more often than an email, and the fewer taps it takes, the more people finish.
A text that works:
Hi Maria, thanks for choosing Rivera Plumbing today! If you have a minute, a quick Google review helps a small business like ours a lot: [link]. — Carlos
Short, personal, one link, no pressure.
3. Make it automatic
The plan fails the week you’re busy, which is every week. That’s why we set it up in a CRM: when a job is marked done, the customer gets the text on its own, and a reminder two days later if they haven’t left one. Nobody has to remember. You can see how it works on our GoHighLevel page.
4. Reply to every review, good and bad
- Good reviews: thank them by name and mention the job (“Glad the water heater is working again, Maria”). It reads like a real person, because it is.
- Bad reviews: reply calmly, within a day or two, without arguing. Apologize for the experience, give a way to reach you and fix it offline. Future customers read your reply more closely than the complaint.
- Fake reviews: if someone who was never a customer reviews you, report it from your profile. Only Google can remove a review, and only when it breaks Google’s rules.
What not to do
Google’s rules are clear: no paying for reviews, no discounts or gifts in exchange, and no asking only the customers you know are happy while steering the unhappy ones elsewhere (Google’s policy on prohibited content). Google can remove the reviews, and it can restrict your profile.
There is a legal side too. Since October 2024, the FTC’s rule on consumer reviews bans buying fake reviews and paying for reviews that have to say something positive, and courts can impose civil penalties (FTC, Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule).
Also skip:
- Review stations in your office where customers post from your tablet.
- Asking employees or family to post reviews.
- Copying reviews from other sites onto Google.
A simple weekly routine
- Every finished job gets the review text the same day.
- Every new review gets a reply within two days.
- Once a month, look at how many reviews came in and which customers never got the text.
