How Much Does a Website Cost for a Service Business?

A website can cost a monthly builder fee you set up yourself, a few thousand dollars from a freelancer, or more for a custom website from a design studio. The price follows the number of pages, what the site has to do and who writes it. The cheapest site is often the one that brings no calls.

“How much does a website cost?” is the first thing most owners ask us, and the honest answer is a range, because a website for a service business can be a weekend project or a sales tool that brings calls every day. Here is what changes the price, the costs nobody mentions, and how to tell whether a quote is fair.
The three ways to get a website
| Do it yourself | Freelancer or template | Custom website design | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you pay | A monthly builder plan | Usually a few thousand dollars | More, depending on pages and features |
| Who does the work | You | One person | A team: strategy, writing, design, build |
| Design | A template many sites share | A template, adjusted | Made for your brand and your customers |
| Words on the page | You write them | Often you write them | Written to sell, with your input |
| Best for | Testing an idea | A simple site on a tight budget | A business that wants the site to bring work |
These are rough ranges, not quotes: prices vary by city, by how many pages you need and by who is on the other side.
What changes the price
- Number of pages. A one-page site and a site with a page for each service and each town you serve are different projects. For local SEO, those service and town pages are what bring calls (we explain why in our Google map pack guide).
- What the site has to do. Showing your work is simple. Booking appointments, taking payments, selling products or working in English and Spanish adds work.
- Who writes the words. Writing is the part owners underestimate most. Clear pages that say what you do, where and why you take time to write.
- Photos and video. Real photos of your crew and your work beat stock photos, and someone has to take them.
- Connections. Forms that land in your CRM, a booking calendar, a WhatsApp button, analytics: each one has to be set up and tested.
The costs nobody mentions
- Domain: a yearly fee, and it should be registered in your name, not the designer’s.
- Hosting and security: monthly or yearly, sometimes included.
- Updates: new services, new photos, new prices. Ask who does them and what each change costs.
- A slow site: the cost you don’t see on the invoice. Google measures how fast a page shows its main content and how quickly it responds; it calls a page good when the main content shows within 2.5 seconds and it reacts to a tap within 200 milliseconds (web.dev, Core Web Vitals).
- A redesign in two years because the first site was built on something nobody can edit.
Why a custom website pays for itself
For a service business, a website is not a brochure. It is the place where an ad click, a Google search or a ChatGPT recommendation becomes a phone call. A custom website earns its price when it does four things a template usually doesn’t:
- It loads fast on a phone. Most of your visitors are on their phone, standing in a kitchen with a leak, not at a desk.
- It gets found. A clear page per service and town, clean titles and structured data help Google and AI assistants understand what you do and where.
- It is written to sell. What you do, for whom, why you, and a clear next step (call, text, book) on every screen.
- It connects to your follow-up. Every form and booking lands in your CRM and gets an answer in seconds, so the lead you paid for doesn’t go cold.
Questions to ask before you sign
- Who owns the domain, the design and the content if we stop working together?
- How long until launch? (Most of our sites go live in four to eight weeks.)
- Will my old pages be redirected so I keep my Google rankings?
- Who writes the words, and do I approve them?
- What does each change cost after launch?
- How will I know how many calls and forms the site brings?
If a quote doesn’t answer these, it isn’t comparable to one that does.
How we build it
Our custom website design studio plans every page around your services and the searches your customers make, writes and designs it for your brand, builds it on the platform that fits (WordPress, Shopify, Webflow or Next.js) and connects it to your CRM from day one. You own everything. We quote each site after a free call, once we know what it has to do; see how our pricing works.
