Free in-home estimateFacebook Ads vs Google Ads for a Service Business

Start with Google Ads when people already search for your service, like an emergency plumber or a roofer after a storm. Start with Facebook and Instagram ads when they don’t search yet but would buy if they saw you, like a med spa treatment or a job opening. Most service businesses end up running both.
The article

Every week a business owner asks us the same question: should I put my ad budget on Facebook or on Google? The honest answer depends on one thing: whether your customers are already looking for you. Here is how a marketing agency for service businesses decides, platform by platform.
Google Ads catches people who are already searching
When a pipe bursts at 11 PM, nobody opens Instagram. They type “emergency plumber near me” into Google and call one of the first names they see. Google Ads puts your business in those top spots, and you pay when someone clicks.
That makes Google the first choice for services people search for when they need them:
- Home services: plumbing, HVAC, electrical, roofing, garage doors, pest control.
- Urgent legal needs: car accidents, criminal defense, immigration.
- Repairs with a deadline: water damage, broken AC in July, a locksmith.
For many home services there is also Google’s Local Services Ads, the “Google Guaranteed” listings above the regular ads. You pay per lead instead of per click, and Google screens your license and insurance first.
The catch: on Google you compete for the same searches as every other company in town, so clicks in busy trades get expensive. A Google campaign only pays off with a fast landing page and someone who answers the phone.
Facebook and Instagram create demand that doesn’t exist yet
Nobody searches “lip filler” the day they decide to book one. They see a before-and-after from a med spa nearby, save it, and book two weeks later. Meta’s ads, on Facebook and Instagram, work on people who were not looking but would buy if they saw you.
That makes Meta the first choice when:
- The service is a want, not an emergency: med spa treatments, remodeling, landscaping, cleaning plans.
- You are hiring: staffing agencies fill shifts with Facebook lead forms. We wrote about what one job applicant costs on Facebook.
- You can show the work: a kitchen before and after, a crew on the job, a happy client.
Meta’s lead forms open inside the app with the person’s name and phone already filled in, so a lead often costs less than a click on Google in a busy trade. The trade-off is intent: a lead from Facebook is curious, not desperate, so the follow-up has to be fast.
Side by side
| Google Ads | Facebook & Instagram Ads | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sees it | People searching for your service right now | People who match your customer but aren’t searching |
| Best for | Emergencies, repairs, urgent legal help | Treatments, remodels, hiring, anything visual |
| You pay for | Clicks (or leads, on Local Services Ads) | Views and clicks; lead forms inside the app |
| Lead intent | High: they want it now | Lower: they want it, someday soon |
| What makes it work | A fast page and a phone that gets answered | Real photos and video, and a reply in minutes |
The part both platforms have in common
The platform brings the lead. What happens next decides whether you get the job. A Harvard Business Review study found that companies that contacted an online lead within an hour were nearly seven times as likely to qualify it as those that waited longer (HBR, “The Short Life of Online Sales Leads”).
That is why we never run ads without the follow-up behind them: every lead lands in a CRM that sends a text and an email within seconds and keeps following up until they book. You can see how that works on our GoHighLevel CRM page.
So which one should you start with?
- People search for what you do, and the job is urgent: start with Google.
- People don’t search, but buy when they see it: start with Facebook and Instagram.
- You are hiring: start with Facebook lead forms, in English and Spanish.
- You have the budget for both: run both, and let the numbers decide where the next dollar goes.
A useful rule: give a new campaign about a month and enough budget to get real data before judging it. Two weeks of $10 a day tells you very little.
How we run it
Our paid ads management covers Meta, Google, TikTok and ChatGPT ads for one monthly fee, plus a one-time setup. Your ad budget goes straight to the platforms, on your own card, so you always see what was spent. We write the ads, film or design the creative from your real work, and connect every lead to the follow-up.
